Garage Storage That Does Not Collapse

Overhead racks and wall shelving are only as good as what they are fixed to, and many garages add summer heat and a water heater to plan around.

Garage storage carries heavy, awkward loads over a concrete floor, often a few feet from a water heater, in a room that takes the whole summer. Before choosing the product, look at what it will be fixed to.

What should garage shelving be fastened to?

Shelving should be fastened to the studs and joists, because many garage walls are only drywall over studs. A drywall anchor holds what its maker rates it for and no more, so read that figure on the package before you trust one with loaded shelving; for anything heavy, we’d find the studs and fix into those instead.

Overhead racks go into the ceiling joists, at the spacing and with the fasteners the rack maker’s installation sheet calls for. A rack that pulls out of a ceiling drops everything on it at once.

How much weight can an overhead garage rack hold?

The capacity stated for an overhead rack belongs to the installation the maker describes, so read the two together. We wouldn’t load one past that figure, or hang it from anything the instructions don’t name.

Our own habit is to spread the weight along a shelf and keep the heaviest things low, where a fall is short.

Gas appliances bring rules of their own. The 2018 International Residential Code’s fuel gas chapter requires the ignition source of a gas appliance in a private garage to sit at least 18 inches above the floor, unless the appliance is listed as flammable-vapor-ignition resistant, and wants the appliance either 6 feet up or protected from being hit by a vehicle. Metro Nashville Codes adopted the 2024 International Building Codes in July 2025, so the edition and section numbers that apply to your house may differ. Whatever protection sits around your water heater, shelving shouldn’t move it or crowd it.

  • Studs and joists, never drywall alone
  • Overhead racks loaded within the maker’s rating
  • Heaviest things low, lightest overhead
  • Shelving clear of the water heater, the furnace and any barrier around them
  • Fuel, solvents and paint kept away from gas appliances

Heat is a real factor here

We spend our summers working in these garages, and an unconditioned one gets hot. NFPA’s lithium-ion battery safety guidance says not to store batteries in extremely hot or cold locations, or anywhere they block the only exit from a room, so keep the door into the house clear of the charging shelf.

For paint, cleaners, oils and pesticides, the EPA’s household hazardous waste page says to follow the storage instructions on each product’s label and to keep products in their original containers, never in food containers. Anything with a temperature range on the label is worth reading before it lives in the garage year-round.

If the garage holds a pantry overflow, the FDA’s advice on storing food safely is to keep non-perishable food away from household cleaning products and chemicals, so give it a shelf of its own.

Plan around the car doors

A common planning error is shelving that stops a car door opening fully. Measure with the vehicle parked and the doors open before fixing anything.

Storage on the wall also leaves less to move when the floor is coated, because we need the whole slab clear to grind it and lay an epoxy system. Keep cardboard boxes up off bare concrete if water ever reaches it; we’ve written separately about how water gets onto a garage floor and how to stop it.

If a coating is on your list, ask us for a free estimate before the shelving goes up, and the floor can be done while the garage is still empty.

FAQ

Garage Storage That Does Not Collapse — questions

Can I hang shelves on garage drywall?

Light things, within what the anchor’s package says it will hold. For loaded shelving, find the studs and fix into those. For an overhead rack, use the ceiling joists and the fasteners the rack maker specifies in its installation sheet.

What should not be stored in a garage here?

Lithium-ion batteries, for one, since NFPA advises against storing them in extremely hot or cold locations. For paint, cleaners, oils and pesticides, follow the storage directions on each label and keep them in their original containers, as the EPA advises, and keep any food on a shelf away from household chemicals. Fuel and solvents belong well away from a gas water heater or furnace.

Are overhead garage racks safe?

That comes down to the installation. Follow the rack maker’s instructions exactly: the framing they name, the fasteners they specify and nothing over the stated rating. If you aren’t sure what is above the ceiling, have it checked before anything heavy goes overhead, because a rack that comes down drops its whole load at once.

How do you design garage storage?

Start with the car: park it, open its doors, and measure what is left before fixing anything. Put shelving on studs and racks on joists, with the heaviest things low and the lightest overhead, and keep it clear of the water heater or furnace. If the floor is getting coated, do that while the garage is empty.
